In September of 1997, San Diego State University's Department of English and Comparative Literature in conjunction with SDSU Press began publication of an annual journal of contemporary poetry called Poetry International. From the initial publication, the journal had been committed to surveying a wide range of poetry in America and throughout the world. The credo for each issue is summarized in these lines from Walt Whitman, which we print following the title page to remind us of our mission:The first three issues of the journal, 1997, 1998 and 1999, reflect this diversity and energy. They include poems by well established poets like Charles Simic, Robert Bly, Diane Wakoski, Maxine Kumin, Jane Hirschfield, Ai, Hayden Carruth, Stephen Dunn, Billy Collins, Gary Soto, and many others along side of new voices like Thylias Moss, Susan Wheeler, Brett Foster and Nan Cohen. Each issue also includes a translation section which features poetry from many countries of the world translated into English.Creeds and schools in abeyance,
Retiring back a while sufficed at what they are,
but never forgotten, I harbor for good or bad,
I permit to speak at every hazard, Nature without check,
with original energy. Our translators have included the late John Frederick Nims, W.S. Merwin, Robert Bly, and Martha Collins, and we have featured poems from Vietnam, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Greece, Serbia, Japan, and Mexico. Each issue also includes a special feature, and our 1998 issue featured Poetry of the New Russia, a selection from a dozen contemporary Russian poets in translation. Our book review section regularly offers commentary on poetry anthologies, books by individual poets, and poetic criticism.
The journal is edited by Fred Moramarco, whose book, Containing Multitudes: Poetry in the United States, 1950-1990,was published in 1998 by Twayne. The San Diego Editorial Board includes Harry Polkinhorn, the Director of SDSU Press, and Sandra Alcosser, Marilyn Chin, and Glover Davis, both of whom teach in the MFA program at SDSU, as well as San Diego poets, Bruce H. Boston and Steve Kowit. The National Advisory Board includes former Poet Laureate Rita Dove, Carolyn Forché, C.K. Williams, Marilyn Hacker, David Mura, Robert Creeley, Christopher Buckley, James Tate, Dana Gioia, Jerome Rothenberg, and Robert Kelly. Joseph Duemer from Clarkson College is the journal's book review editor.
Poetry Internationalis not a cliquish or fashionable repository for a poetry of the moment, but rather an inclusive celebration of the enduring legacy of language finely tuned to express the whole range of human emotion and experience. We intend to continue to publish a poetry that makes a difference in people's lives, and startles us anew with the endless capacity of language to awaken our senses and expand our awareness.
Single copies of Poetry International are $12.00 for individuals and $15.00 for Institutions. Subscriptions for individuals are $24.00 for two years and $36.00 for three; for institutions $30 for two years and $45 for three. For additional information contact:
