The book launch extravaganza of MOVIMIENTO EN LA SANGRE: The Chicano Movement - 1971–1974, Through the Lens of an Activist Chicano Nicholas George Inzunza. Written by Nicolás Jorge Inzunza & Ralph Inzunza and published by San Diego State University Press, this landmark deluxe book promises to leave a lasting mark in the cultural legacy of Mexican-Americans in California and beyond as well as chronicle a newly-found achievement in the history of American photography. Update: The speaker list for Saturday is almost complete--the event will feature Deidré Guevara, Director of Community Engagement, SDMA & MOPA@SDMA; Roxana Velásquez, Maruja Baldwin Executive Director and CEO of SDMA; Dr. William "Memo" Nericcio, Director of San Diego State University Press, Ralph Inzunza, best-selling SDSU Press author and San Diego Democratic political advisor, and direct from the wilds of LA, Gustavo Arellano, author of Ask a Mexican and a widely-read and admired columnist for The Los Angeles Times. More about the book: Documenting key moments that encapsulate Chicana/o activism and political gains in the early 1970s, Nick and Ralph's MOVIMIENTO EN LA SANGRE emerges both as a love letter to a fallen ancestor and a moving photographic exercise in cultural archeology -- with over 200 never-before-published photographs that capture the rise of Chicano social justice advocacy in the 1970s, it as if an erased piece of history has been restored. Their paired effort -- restoring the traces of Nick Inzunza's roving camera --  captures the magic of a decisive political moment and the incredible talents of a photographer who also happened to be an activist. Rarely are these twin talents folded into the body of one person, but National City's Nicholas George Inzunza was no common individual, and the legacy of his activism and art are now captured in this book from San Diego State University Press. Entering its seventh decade, SDSU Press is the only major university press in the sprawling California State University system, and is recognized here and abroad as an innovative force for Latina/o and Latin American Studies.
