About the Book
A bilingual collection of interviews, essays, and critical reflections on dance in the U.S.-Mexico border region, Bodies beyond Borders gathers voices from both sides of the line to document a performance culture too often treated as peripheral to national histories of dance. Critics, dancers, choreographers, and scholars examine institutions, companies, movement traditions, and the practical realities of making dance in San Diego, Tijuana, Mexicali, and the broader borderlands.
The sixth volume in the Binational Press border series includes work by Patricia Cardona, César Delgado Martínez, Sergio Gómez Montero, Victoria Hamilton, Jean Isaacs, Luz Mercedes López Barrera, Maxine Mahon, Harry Polkinhorn, Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz, and Marylou Valencia. Its contents range from theoretical discussions of dance as language to accounts of contemporary dance in northwestern Mexico, interviews with choreographers and company directors, and documentation of binational encounters. Spanish texts are paired with English versions, turning translation itself into part of the book’s border practice.
