Visual Arts on the U.S./Mexican Border
edited by Harry Polkinhorn, Rogelio Reyes, Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz
About the Book
One of the earliest book-length efforts to treat the U.S.-Mexico border as a site of visual culture rather than only as a political, economic, or sociological problem, Visual Arts on the U.S./Mexican Border brings together artists and critics working across the line between California and Baja California. The volume is bilingual and illustrated, and belongs to the Binational Press / Editorial Binacional series jointly developed by San Diego State University and the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.
The collection includes Shifra Goldman on the Border Art Workshop / Taller de Arte Fronterizo and the U.S. reception of Central American art; Guillermo Gómez-Peña on the experience of a Mexican artist crossing into California and inhabiting a bicultural field; Felipe Ehrenberg on contemporary visual-art tendencies in Baja California; and Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz on border art from a Mexican critical perspective. Rather than treating the border as a backdrop, the essays approach it as a working cultural medium—one that changes how art is produced, circulated, interpreted, and named.
